A Comparison of JACK Intelligent Agents and the Open Agent Architecture

The popularity of agents has given rise to many Agent Architectures. Each of these architectures have different approaches to agency. The approaches have different strengths and weaknesses in the support they provide for different aspects of agency. This paper compares the support provided by two Agent Architectures, JACK Intelligent Agents and the Open Agent Architecture, for BDI Agents, Teamwork and Mobility. From the results of the comparisons, JACK appears as the more powerful architecture, mainly due to the fact that it supports BDI agents. BDI agents add a great amount of flexibility and robustness to multi-agent systems. OAA does not support BDI agents, but it can be adapted to support them. Both architectures support teamwork and they will have to be empirically investigated to determine which best supports it, as the comparison based on the features they provide has been inconclusive. Neither of the architectures provide support for mobility, but the architectures are able to be extended to support it.
